On the market today there are tons of free blogging platforms, if you are just getting into blogging however I would always suggest using wordpress. WordPress in my opinion is the easiest platform to use with literally thousands of compatible plugins and themes. To be honest I started with wordpress many years ago and have never looked back or at other platforms. Starting with wordpress is super easy and the most beneficial.
1 ~ WordPress.com!
So first things first you need to ensure that you don’t get your wordpress platforms mixed up! Make sure you hop on over to wordpress.com and not wordpress.org which is a self hosted platform for more advance users. When you visit wordpress.com you will see “get started” in the top right corner, click there and begin.
2 ~ What do you want?
So the second step is up to you. You need to decide what your website is gong to be. Are you looking to start an online shop or do you just want to blog part time while you have time off work? Either way this is the step where you will be choosing and figuring that all out. I have chosen blog as that is what I have had previously, if you decide to start with a blog and then change your mind and want to open a shop that isn’t a problem; you can change anytime because WordPress is that flexible.
3 ~ It’s all about the look.
So this is the part where you get to pick the theme you want for your blog. I would suggest just starting with a basic one, you have hundreds to pick from. If you just stick to a basic one for the time being it means you have the chance to get to grips with wordpress and the layout of themes. You can at any stage pick another, more complex theme and even buy your own to install onto your blog/site.
4 ~ We all need a name!
This is the part where you pick your domain name. You can either purchase a domain name, or type in a keyword that your website will be based on and let wordpress give you suggestions. Myself I took a few days and had a whole list of name ideas because I wanted it to be what I wanted and I narrowed it down to three, there was only one available so I was lucky I didn’t had to pick or think again!
As you can see below I have selected the word yellow and have a whole list of ideas to pick from. It also tells you if the domain is free or if you need a premium package with it.
5 ~ Pick your plan.
After you have decided with a domain name you will need to pick your plan. Of course I am talking about a free platform and you can pick the free option. You also have three other options to pick from and they are totally up to you and what you want to get out of your website. I started with a free plan until I got my feet.
6 ~ Join and away you go.
The last step is super easy. Make sure you sign up with a valid email and password and you can start! You have your blog/site and you can use it however you want! If you want to know more about how to use your blog and change certain features check out my other wordpress posts. So there you have it, 6 easy steps that mean you can start your own wordpress website for free!
