Are you trying to lose weight but don’t want to join the gym or pay out for equipment you might never use? I’m in the same boat. I had a gym membership and I didn’t go at all, I thought about buying an exercise bike or treadmill for the house but they’re way too expensive. Not only do they cost a fortune to buy but they also use up electricity and that’s not going to look good on your energy bill! I’ve decided to share with my reader’s cheap ways to lose weight. Weight loss at home can be fun, it can be easy and it can be cheap!
Now I’m not skinny, I’m not ripped and I don’t pretend to have a hot body that everyone wants. That being said, I lose weight, I maintain my weight and I look how I want by using various ways to lose weight at home and they work. Some might not be for you and that’s fine, at the end of the day we all lose weight in our own way, you don’t even have to want to lose weight, you might be happy with how you are and want to maintain the figure you have and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Below you’ll see some of the ways I lose weight at home. Some of them are easy, others not so much. I have some favourites that you might be able to point out. I also want to say that losing weight at the gym is possible if you can get a good deal. I used to go to The Gym Group and I found their prices a little high and their changing rooms had no privacy so I stopped going. I now use JD gyms and their prices are cheaper and they have more privacy and help within the actual gym.
At Home Weight Loss Tips
There are loads of ways to lose weight at home. Take a look at some of the at home weight loss tips below and let me know which ones are your favourite!
Weighted Hula Hoops
The weighted hula hoop has to be one of my favourite ways to lose weight at home. I used to think they were silly and didn’t work. I then started seeing videos on my TikTok feed and found that actually, they work. The one I have linked is the one that I use although I have it in pink because colours have no genders! I was pretty big when I started to use my weight hoop so they’re great for big people who just want to lose some weight.
You can get smart apps that you can use alongside your weight hula hoop if you want, there are also videos and motivational clips online if you need them. Personally, I like to put some music on and vibe with that as I use my hula hoop. One thing I will point out is that if your knees start to hurt take a break and then go back to it if you want. Let me know if you use a weight hula hoop to lose weight, I’d love to know how you got on with one.
Yoga
I love Yoga! I have Restless Leg Syndrome which I know, sounds made up but it’s not! My legs ache at night if they’re not stretched and active during the day. I use yoga to stretch out the muscles in my legs and since I’ve started, it’s really helped. Yoga isn’t so much about losing weight in my opinion. Instead, I think it’s more about toning up your body and giving what you already have a definition.
I find yoga relaxing, it’s great for mental health and you actually feel like you’ve done something afterwards. I’d suggest getting a good yoga mat, you don’t want a thin one because it won’t last. There are loads of YouTube videos online that you can watch for instructions. I’d suggest always starting as a beginner as you don’t want to dive into the deep end and end up hating it because you’ve done too much, too fast.
Exercise Videos
So this only one really works if you have a large area to work out in. I use my front room as it’s big enough to have me dancing around and not fall into anything. There are loads of free exercise workouts on YouTube or maybe even Instagram if you follow fitness accounts. Don’t pay for workouts, gone is the day when you need to buy a DVD to workout in your own home.
I don’t have any personal favourites as I don’t use them anymore so I’m probably not the best person to ask. Just search for workout videos in YouTube and you’re bound to find something you can get on with. Exercise videos can be a really fun way to lose weight at home and a right giggle if you’re doing it with someone else. The dancing ones have to be the best if you’re looking to laugh the weight off!
Skipping Ropes, Resistance Bands ETC.
So this one works well if you have a garden. When I used to live in a flat I was unable to do this, now I have a house I can. Using a skipping rope is a great way to lose weight at home but you will need a garden. You can also use resistance bands for stretches and to help build up the muscles in your body, mainly your legs which means you can walk further and exercise more.
House Work
Now there are two ways of looking at this one. The first one is that you’re getting lots done around your home, it’s cleaner and hopefully tidier which gives you a certain sense of accomplishment. The other way is that housework can be very physical and it will help you lose weight at home. When I worked as a cleaner I saw the weight falling off of me as I was cleaning a 24 bed care home and it wasn’t easy.
If you’re looking to kill two birds with one stone as they put it, house work is a great way to lose weight. Some of the activities I would suggest to do if you’re looking to lose weight at home while doing house work would be, changing the bedding, vacuuming and gardening. Gardening is great especially if you’re mowing the lawn and it looks nicer when you’re done. If you want to lose weight at home, give housework a try!
VR Exercise
Now, most of the ways to lose weight at home on this list are either cheap or cost nothing at all. This isn’t one of them options I’m afraid, you will have to buy a VR headset in order to do this one. They’re not cheap but they’re totally worth it. I love using my VR Headset, I don’t buy any of the games on there but I use the browser on there and use MoonRider online which is totally free to use, has loads of music on it and will have you dancing around your front room or wherever you use it.
If you already have a VR headset that’s great. Don’t go paying out for the games or apps on there though when you can find so many free options online without having to pay, most of them say you can donate to their team though and if it works for you, maybe donate something?
Exercise Equipment
Now you might be a little too shy, anxious or just hate going to the gym and that’s fine. If you have the money to spend and the room in your house you could always set up your own home gym. You could have a dedicated room with everything you need in it to help you lose weight at home. I’d suggest having an Alexa in it and also a nice TV on the wall if you want to do Yoga or exercise videos.
You can also get exercise bikes, treadmills, weight machines and so much more to kit out your weight loss room and you don’t have to spend a fortune on them either because you can get some really good deals. I would suggest that if you’re going to do this, take a look in the black Friday sales and you might find a gem for the fraction of the normal cost.
Eating Healthy
As you know, losing weight isn’t just about exercising because it doesn’t matter how much you exercise, if you’re eating too much bad food you’ll still put weight on. Losing weight at home is the practice of both exercising at home and eating better. I used to follow Slimming World which helped me a lot although I found that if I stopped it I’d only end up putting the weight straight back on. That’s why I now count calories and it’s super easy to do so.
If you want to easily lose weight then I’d suggest calorie counting. You can use an app like MyFitnessPal which I use daily and it’ll help you stick within your daily calorie limit. I also use the apple app Fitness, I set myself a daily calorie walking goal and try to hit it. I don’t worry too much if I don’t hit my calorie goal for the day as long as I stay within my calorie limit. Counting calories is an easy way to lose weight and I’d recommend it every time.
It’s also all about what you eat. You’ll find that processed or ready made food has loads of calories in them. Step away from the Tesco meal deals because they’re the worst! If I’m on the go I’ll pick up some protein bars and have one for lunch because they’re easy to have and I don’t need to spend forever eating it. I’d also suggest making sure you have a nice healthy breakfast to start you off for the day, bran flakes are the best although I know they’re not for everyone.
